Stay strong John!

The town's support for our friend John has been amazing. His friends have been rallying in so many wonderful ways to help his family in this difficult time.  Makes me proud to be part of this community.

Pioneer 7th-grader still critical after head injury

Fund set up for family
Seventh-grader John Orcutt remains in critical but stable condition after a brain aneurysm was discovered following a head injury sustained during a baseball practice.
Orcutt, 13, was hit in the head with a soft practice-baseball in the PVRS gym. He had been suffering headaches for several days, which became worse following his injury. Orcutt’s parents picked him up from the March 23 practice and took him home, according to a Monday news release from the school.
At home, Orcutt became unresponsive, and an ambulance rushed him to Life Flight helicopter ambulance took him to the Medical Center, according to  Police Chief Leonard Crossman Jr.

Sticky situation at P.V.R.S.

Hawk in the bottom Right Corner.

Sticky situation at P.V.R.S.

Students duct-tape assistant principal to wall -- and get away with it
If you walked into a school and saw someone being duct-taped to the wall while a group of students cheered, you may have wondered how kids could be so cruel.
But it was philanthropy, not cruelty, that motivated students and faculty at PVRS to tape assistant principal and football coach Mr Duprey, 52, to the lobby wall Friday. The event marked the end of a three-week-long “Pennies for Patients” fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Seventh-grade students brought change in for the duration of the fundraiser, and got to be the first to tape Duprey to the wall.

The price you pay for fun.

OK - so this is a pretty big price though.  Poor kid.  Plays a hockey game with his team - comes off the ice and is asked to stand in for another team that was short.  COOL RIGHT?  Double games, double ice time, a chance to play a great team.  (OK not so cool for Mom and 3yr old brother but we're good sports)

FROSTBITE

Can't really tell in the phone camera shot but the conner tip of his toe is purple!  We were not out of the parking lot and his feet began to thaw in the warm car when he starts freaking out and ripping his boots of as though he's wearing angry beehives on his feet!   Not sure why this happened, I mean we are in the rinks and cold all the time - my guess his feet were wet after first game then 20 mins of rest and not undressing from sweat drenched clothes to then playing again.  Must have just been so busy playing and freezing that he didn't feel it happening.

Though he really wanted to scratch at them he didn't - as much as he wanted to I knew that was bad.  Been keeping an eye on them, nice warm wool socks, fluids and IBU.  Looks like one small blister on the big toe.  Hopefully the pins, needles, and shooting pain will be gone when he wakes in the morning.

Near miss - someones child badly missed for sure.

Well accidents happen.  And this is not a thought that I let escape my mind easily as we are road warriors with all our hockey travels.  Last night returning from another late night practice we passed an accident that had JUST happened.  No emergency responders were on site yet.  Only a few passersby that had just stopped in front of us.  Someone was laying on the ground.  My heart sank - I wanted to stop and help but I had two children in the car and my brain had difficulty absorbing all of what I was seeing.  Instantly I make mental note of the mile markers and the exit number and dial 911.  Thankfully several calls had already been made and I was told that emergency was on the way.  Sure enough we soon saw a trooper racing towards the scene we just passed.  I had a sinking feeling in my stomach and feared that we had just witnessed a death.  Confirmed later on the news - two young adults were killed in the single car crash and two other passengers injured.  No cause has been announced yet - but the roads were wet with light snow.

Once again I am thankful that we get to and from hockey and other travels safely.  Prayers to the family's that have lost their loved ones last night.

I carry a memory of a very tragic scene I and a car full of my college girl friends in route to FL on spring break.  Many people died in a several car pile up.  A completely horrific sight.  Sadly now Hawk will likely carry this memory for his lifetime.  Hopefully from it he learns to continue to appreciate life and to proceed with caution when he someday is himself behind the wheel.

Hockey from the beginning to now . . .

Be patient this video is 6 minutes long so it may take a while to load.

OR
CLICK THIS LINK - It's faster!

In the beginning you can see how Hawk gets his name . . .  with a fuzzy green Mohawk on his helmet.  Till one day a Ref told him to "Take that F*ing thing off your helmet".  Oh well, the name sticks and his deep passion for the game goes on as well.
Somehow we manage to have no pictures of Mema Dy in this montage - not sure how thats is possible seeing how she has been his number one fan having come to over 80% of his games !

His second fan (parents excluded) would be his brother - well truthfully he's hasn't really a choice he gets dragged here and there and everywhere.  You'll see him grow over the years as well.

How Hawk began to skate . . . it was the summer of 2006 and with his own money he purchased a pair of skates at a yard sale up the street from Mema's house.  When winter came he begged me everyday till I gave in and took him to Robin Hood Park to skate on the pond.  His ability to skate from that first day was amazing!  That winter he dabbled in some house league skating with a bunch of hand me down gear from his classmate Ezra.  We searched for ice anywhere we could find it to practice.  We found flood frozen fields, parks, ponds, and rinks! Backwards skating was not an instant strength of his.  But he never gave up, never cut a drill short just cause he was last in line, he skated everything through to the end.   Joining Hawk in his passion was his dad.  For the first few years Dan Sr. jumped on board and coached regular seasons, and 3 on 3 leagues.  Now he's hooked too and plays on a mens league.  Daniel looks forward to being old enough to join the mens league and play with his dad.  He also looks forward to more hockey . . . high school, college and what ever may come.
HAWK = HOCKEY!
